Is That Call or Text Really From BluPeak? How to Tell

How to Tell If a Call or Text Is Really From BluPeak

Imagine you get a text about a $1,200 charge you don’t recognize. Or you get a call from someone who says they’re with BluPeak’s fraud team, and the number on your screen is ours. Before you reply, you need to answer one question: is this really BluPeak?

BluPeak will never ask for your card number, account number, PIN, or one-time access code when we contact you, and we will never ask you to send or move money to stop fraud. If a call or text asks for any of those, it’s a bank impersonation scam. Don’t reply, hang up, and call us at 866.873.4968.

Why scammers pretend to be your credit union

Bank impersonation scams work because they use two things against you: your trust in your credit union and your instinct to act fast when your money looks like it’s at risk. The message is always urgent. A charge is pending, your account is about to be locked, or money is leaving right now.

Scammers also come prepared. They may know your name, your address, or the last four digits of your account, often bought from data breaches. Knowing personal details about you doesn’t make someone BluPeak.

Can scammers make a call look like it’s from BluPeak

Yes. Caller ID spoofing lets anyone make a call to show any number they choose, including ours. Text messages can be spoofed the same way. So the number on your screen isn’t proof of anything. What the person asks you to do is.

How to tell if a text is a scam

A text is not from BluPeak if it:

• Asks you to reply with your card’s security code, your PIN, or your login details
• Includes a link to verify a transaction. BluPeak will never send you a link to verify transactions.
• Tells you to call a number other than 866.873.4968 or the one on the back of your card.

Most fraud text messages have the same goal: get you to respond before you stop and check. If you’re trying to figure out how to know if a text is a scam, the safest test is simple. Don’t reply to the text at all. Call us directly instead.

One version making the rounds right now is the fake fraud alert text, which starts with a Y or N reply and ends with a spoofed call from your “fraud department.” You can read how that scam works step by step in our scam roundup.

How to tell if a call is really from BluPeak

Here’s what we won’t ask:

• We will never ask for your card or account number when we call you.
• We will never ask for your PIN over the phone.
• We will never ask you to send money, move money between accounts, or change the email or phone number on your payment app to reverse a charge.

That last one matters most. Real fraud reversals don’t require you to move anything. The most costly version of this scam ends with a member sending money to “reverse” a charge, believing it’s going back to their own account. It goes to the scammer, and because the member sent it, it looks like a payment they authorized.

Never share your one-time access code

When you log in to digital banking from a new computer or phone, BluPeak sends you a one-time access code. That’s Device Verification, and it means a stolen password isn’t enough to get into your account.

A verification code scam targets exactly that step. The scammer already has your password and needs the code to finish logging in from their own device, so they call or text pretending to be BluPeak and ask you to read it back to “confirm your identity.”
BluPeak staff will never ask you for this code. Anyone who does is trying to get into your account.

When in doubt, hang up and call us

You don’t have to figure it out while someone is on the line. Hang up, then call us at 866.873.4968. Our team is available Mon- Fri 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sat. 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. PST. If the alert was real, we’ll take it from there. If it wasn’t, you’ve stopped the scam before it cost you anything.

We suggest using the BluPeak app to turn off your debit card while you verify with us.

You can also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission.

Questions members ask

Does BluPeak text members about fraud?
Yes, our alerts only ask you to confirm whether you made a purchase. We will never ask for your card details, PIN, login, or access code.

Will BluPeak ever ask for my one-time access code?
No. The text code is for you to verify your identity when logging into digital banking. BluPeak will never ask you to read it to us by phone, text, or email.

What is BluPeak’s fraud phone number?
Call our team at 866.873.4968. Mon- Fri 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sat. 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. PST. Use this number or the one on the back of your card, not a number from a suspicious text or email.
